When you think of the biggest hydropower station, you may think of the three gorges hydropower station that has already been built. Ever since its completion in 2009, the three gorges dam has been the world's largest hydropower station and a major conduit for shipping along the Yangtze river. Now, however, China is building another world-class hydropower station, called the world's largest under construction, the baihetan hydropower station.
Baihetan hydropower station is located in ningnan county of sichuan province and qiaojia county of yunnan province. After the completion of baihetan hydropower station, it can not only generate hydroelectric power, but also effectively prevent flood and store water.
The construction of baihetan hydropower station was put forward as early as the 1950s. In 1958, the state planned to build a super-large hydropower station in baihetan, with technical assistance from czechoslovak experts. However, in 1961, the construction of the baihetan hydropower station was put on hold due to the breakdown of sino-soviet relations and three difficult years.
Until 1965, the construction plan of baihetan hydropower station was included in the national development plan again. Unfortunately, the baihetan hydropower station, which had just been listed in the national development plan, met the cultural revolution. During the ten years from 1966 to 1976, the construction plan of baihetan hydropower station was once again stalled.
It was not until 2002 that the state officially approved the construction plan for the baihetan hydropower station. Later, due to environmental pollution nearby and the wenchuan earthquake in 2008, construction of the baihetan hydropower station never started.
